Enjoyable Science Fiction thriller, Knowing managed to be a more impressive film than what I'd initially thought. Although not a great movie, this is nonetheless a good film, well worth your time. The film had a very good concept, which kept me entertained, however at times I did feel that there were aspects of the film could have been improved upon.
Halfway through the film, the film seems to lose its vigor, and in turn, the vibe of the film sort of falters a bit, and instead of being a truly memorable, standout feature, it lingers on as a good, entertaining picture that never realizes its ambition of being a thought provoking, truly interesting film. I mean, the film is good, and it's entertaining, but it could have been so much more as well.
Director Alex Proyas, who has experience in the Sci Fi genre, helms the project, and through his lens, he captures a good atmosphere that is engaging, but does lack in terms of unrealized potential.
I was hoping for something truly great with this film, but as a whole, it's a good affair, one that is one of the better of recent Nicholas Cage films. If you can forget the film's flaws, you'll like it for what it is, just don't expect a truly grand sci fi epic, as the film leaves a bit to be desired. Proyas has directed better movies, but Knowing for what it is, is worth seeing if you enjoy mindless entertainment, and it's far better than what you might think. Although not a great movie, this film definitely doesn't deserve the negativity it has received.
Go into the film with an open mind, and you might enjoy it. Alex r Super Reviewer. Apr 24, It was interesting at first but then it didn't evolve into something impressive. Maymay A Super Reviewer. Oct 22, Scenario time: Some intern working in the studio renders out a 3D CGI scene of the sun's flares engulfing the world one city at a time, destroying everything. The future producer of "Knowing" sees this scene and immediate hires writers to come up with a screenplay as fast as possible revolving around this as the ending.
They hire Nicolas Cage, because they know the movie's going to be awful regardless and. Now, I wasn't there, but it seems like this is exactly how this film came to fruition. Jason D Super Reviewer. Jul 07, When it comes to WTF endings, Knowing has a doozy. The story follows a MIT professor who gets a list of numbers that predict world disasters, and he soon becomes obsessed with finding a way to save his son when the numbers predict a global apocalypse.
Nicolas Cage and Rose Byrne lead the cast and give good performances. And the story is quite interesting, full of intrigue and mystery. However, the ending is rushed and comes off as bizarre since it's not properly developed. Still, Knowing is a daring and provocative thriller that explores some interest themes.

The only honest way to end the movie would be to deliver something on the scale of their deepest-seated fears, and that's just what "Knowing" offers. The beings who have been whispering into Caleb's Chandler Canterbury and Abby's Lara Robinson ears finally reveal themselves as a more evolved alien race, who have been landing space arks all over Earth to save a select few humans and animals from the imminent destruction of the planet. They save Caleb and Abby, leaving John to die along with most of mankind in the solar flare event, and the children are taken to safety on a heavenly new planet.
All of this is quite simple and straightforward. So why is the ending such a headscratcher? Well, as it happens, "Knowing" operates by a metaphorical framework so overt that it's impossible to just take it at face value. There's obviously a deeper meaning to it all.
Inevitably, there are innumerable different ways to interpret the aliens, their means of communication, the solar flare, and the new planet, such that no one explanation can be "correct. The parallels between "Knowing" and the Old Testament's Book of Ezekiel are rather blatant via Bible Hub : The book's first chapter speaks of "living creatures" with "the likeness of a man" that come to the prophet enclosed in "a wheel in the middle of a wheel" via Bible Hub — exactly the shape of the aliens' space arks in "Knowing.
Then, there are also references to other Biblical passages, which suggest a more pick-'n'-mix approach to Christian mythology: John's separation from his son Caleb calls to mind the Matthew verse "Then shall two be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left," and the bringing of the kids to the new, Eden-like planet could be interpreted as a Rapture, following the Revelation -like reception of the beings' whispers.
All in all, "Knowing'"s ending can be taken to visualize the overarching Christian belief in the saving of an elected few by a higher power. It can also be taken, however, to mean something else entirely. There are numbers. There are, eventually, aliens and a massive space ship. There are other worlds, and a hint of time travel.
Sci-fi is often dystopian. The Earth is a finite resource but, by ingenuity and perseverance and kindness, we can survive as a species. In Knowing, however, we just die. All of us. This is the same con for those expecting a disaster movie, a genre known for triumphant endings. Like sci-fi, it takes us into a hellish world of impossible odds. But then Gene Hackman pops up to lead you through to the other side The Poseidon Adventure — in which Hackman plays … a pastor.
Non-believers including Nic Cage , again are left to rue the day. The aliens, too, may in fact be angels. When they take the chosen ones up into the space ship they transform into glowing, heavenly bodies with wings.
And, like any religious dogma worth its salt, not everyone can be saved. So a few kids are saved — because suffer little children etc. Is it a brave move? The film takes everything you expect from at least two genres, and subverts it in the closing scene. It also goes somewhere very few movies do: total and utter annihilation of the hero, hope and everything we know and believe to be beautiful about the world.
We try not to think too much about mortality in any real sense. Being faced with the obliteration of our species, our loved ones and our home with zero warning in Knowing? Not cool. Firstly, when he thinks about his dead wife as the film begins. He plays it again while driving home just before the solar flare strikes. Both times, the music functions as an elegy. Horror movies often pair sex and death. Thrillers might include comedy to lighten the dread.
