The catastrophe at Mount Meron in northern Israel took place during the annual hillula — a celebration marking the anniversary of the death of a famous sage — for Rabbi Shimon Bar-Yochai.

The event typically draws tens, if not hundreds, of thousands of visitors to his gravesite site, the vast majority of them ultra-Orthodox. It is the biggest religious festival of the year in Israel, as pilgrims sing, dance and feast around bonfires on Mount Meron throughout night.

The hillula on Thursday, in which at least 45 Israelis were killed and another injured during a stampede, was the biggest event to take place in the country since the coronavirus lockdown ended last month.

Rabbi Shimon, who lived in the second century, was a brilliant Talmudic scholar, who according to some accounts, was the author of the Zohar, the main work of Kabbalah , or Jewish mysticism.

He was a disciple of Rabbi Akiva, one of the greatest Jewish scholars and sages of all times. Rabbi Shimon was among the few to be spared.
