Confrontations arise, and Sean is faced with a simple decision: drift or die. After totaling his car in an illegal street race, Shaun Boswell is sent to live with his father, who is in the military, in Tokyo, Japan, to avoid juvy or even jail.

While in school, he befriends Twinkie, a "military brat. Though forbidden to drive, he decides to race against D. To repay his debt, he enters the underground world of drift street racing. As he becomes better and better, he must finally prove his worth in that world by once again racing D. Sean Boswell, who has always been an outsider. A loner at school, his only connection to the indifferent world around him is through illegal street racing -- which has made him particularly unpopular with the local authorities.

Escorted by Kamata and his men to the starting line where Sean awaits, Takashi looks on as Sean shows confidence a draw back to their first race where Sean looked at a confident Takashi before the race.

Getting the upper-hand from the get go thanks to his car's lighter weight, Takashi maintains the lead throughout the early stages of the race, but progressively becomes more and more distracted as his attention shifts towards preventing Sean from taking the lead, causing him to make mistakes, such as repeatedly crashing into parked cars or taking corners too widely, which allows Sean to take the lead.

However, Takashi rams Sean to regain the lead, but once again continues to get distracted, costing him the lead once more as he's forced to take a tight corner, which Sean skilfully drifts through.

As they reach the canyon's edge, he nearly takes out Sean out of the race by ramming into him, going as far as take him off balance and try to push him off the edge.

Sean manages to pull out of the lock and continues racing, but becomes frustrated and retaliates by hitting Takashi's car twice before taking the lead again, which causes an enraged Takashi to rear end him and break one of his headlights.

Takashi then drives off road to overtake Sean once more but causes even more damage to his car with a great example being his spoiler breaking off and hitting Sean's windshield and gets overtaken yet again. Nearing the end of the race, Takashi forgets about trying to win and instead attempts to kill Sean by ramming into him repeatedly to force him off the road, but inadvertently ends crashing himself after Sean manages to avoid one of his charges, his car driving off a cliff, tumbling down the hillside and almost crushing Sean's car as he passes by, but Sean manages to drive underneath him and win the race.

At the end of Tokyo Drift , beaten and humilliated, he leaves Tokyo as per the conditions of their race. In a deleted scene, Takashi is shown being taken away by Kamata's men after he climbs out of the wreckage of his Z Takashi was an exceptional drift racer, nicknamed the "Drift King" because of the amazing feats he could achieve when he engaged in drift races.

He was skilled enough to easily best Sean in their first encounter, even taking the time to taunt him on how much better he was.
